The Comet recently spoke with Il Divo’s Swiss tenor Urs Bühler about life on the road, which for him includes motorcycle rides and heavy metal! The classical crossover quartet superstars are in the middle of their most extensive North American tour to date in support of album “Wicked Game.”
Despite being on a massive and hectic world tour since January, the group did head back into the studio in May to work on a new album. “Wicked Game” was released in November of 2011 and the previous album, “The Promise,” hit stores in 2008.
“We spent too much time between the last albums,” says Urs. “We just didn’t want to wait so long.”
Though classically trained since he was a child, Urs found himself in a heavy metal band called Conspiracy when he was just 17 years old and still holds a soft spot in his heart for the genre.
“I love electric guitars,” he says. “Conspiracy was an 80s melodic rock back like Bon Jovi. It was a lot of fun, but I moved on. My voice always seemed very much fitted for classical music. But I love playing guitar. One day I’d like to spend a year or two practicing regularly. I truly admire the big Rock Gods!”
So what does road life look like for Il Divo?
“I like to work out. It’s a good way to balance traveling and keep in shape. David (American tenor David Miller) and I also like to rent Harleys and go for rides. It blows my mind clear. I can ride for the entire day. Sometime I also like to wander out in to whatever city I’m in and sit in a café and watch the world go by.”
Urs is very excited about the current Il Divo show. “It’s a lot of new material nobody has seen before! Come see it!”
I'll try with this blog to bring together the community about our love for Il Divo.

The four male singing sensation, Il Divo (Italian for ‘divine male performer’) will peform a divine concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion this evening. You may already know that this multi-national vocal group, who sing operatic pop, were put together by music mogul, Simon Cowell. After hearing Andrea Bocelli sing, Cowell was inspired to recreate the style and sound of ‘The Three Tenors’ and established the Il Divo project. After two years, the foursome that was selected consisted of French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, American tenor David Miller, and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler.
What you probably don’t know is that Il Divo was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records when named the Most Multinational UK No.1 Album Group in 2006. You probably also didn’t know that their first, self-titled CD went multiplatinum, and took the number one spot on the charts in a total of 13 countries around the world. And did you know that they have sold over 26 million albums worldwide to date? You don’t achieve those kinds of accolades by being hyped by the music industry. When the rest of the music industry takes note, especially icons like Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion, music lovers will too. Il Divo has previously toured with Streisand on a 20-concert tour, and cut a duet with Dion.
The music in their set list is as diversified as probably the personalities of the four-man group, given they come from different countries of origin. Their 2012 tour is comprised of two acts of ten songs each. Although I don’t usually present the complete set list, just to let you know what you’ll miss if you don’t get ticket to see this fabulous foursome.
Act OneCome What May
Dove L’Amore
Adagio
Nella fantasia
Medley (La Vida Sin Amor / Ti Amero / Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman / Angelina)
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina
Everytime I Look At You
Passera
Unchained Melody
My Way
Act TwoSenza Parole
Melanconia
Si Tu Mi Amas
Mama
Hallelujah
Crying
Ven A Mi
Regressa Mi
Por Que Tu Me Amas
Somewhere
“Ven A Mi” and “Sensa Parole” are new songs on this tour. The pop songs and classics are performed in Spanish, English, Italian, and French. Like Il Divo’s music; the audience at the Pavilion is expected to be as diversified, attracting a wide range of ethnicities.

Il Divo set to bring Halifax fans to theit feet
Imagine, even with all of Il Divo’s successes worldwide, fear it will all suddenly end.
No more adoring fans. No more bringing people to their feet over their incredible musical talents.
But as large crowds gather across the United States and Canada, including in Halifax on Thursday night, for the group’s latest North American tour, the quartet can sleep well knowing they still got it.
“I never realize how popular we are,” Il Divo’s Sebastian Izambard said in a recent phone interview with Metro. “I know we are touring and there are people that come see us but I’m always worried that we’re not popular anymore, I’m a little paranoid.”
Fresh from Tea with The Queen in honour of her Diamond Jubilee, Il Divo is performing tonight at the Metro Centre for their latest album, Wicked Game. As experienced through their previous work, the album is a collection of original and popular pieces that have undergone a “pop-ra” makeover.
The brain child of Simon Cowell, of reality television producing and judging fame both here and across the pond, Il Divo is a unique combination of four operatic male voices. Scouting for over two years in 17 countries, Izambard came to the group from the French pop world.
“I was working in France as a pop singer and composer,” he said. “When I heard the songs they were working with I thought this will either never work or will be a tremendous success.”
Meant to be The Three Tenors for the modern generation, Il Divo’s producers capture the technique and romance of opera through accessible favourites such as Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah or the Broadway-turned-Blockbuster Evita’s, Don’t Cry for me Argentina.
“All of these songs are already covered so we have to keep the quality at that level,” Izambard said. “With our original songs, they are written by our three producers already with our individual strengths in mind.”
As the only member who is not classically trained, Izambard’s hesitant nature has slowly dissipated.
“It’s much easier than I thought it would be because I had worked so in pop music so going into the studio was second nature,” he said. “What I found difficult was the amazing vibrato of the other members because I wasn’t use to it but over time, we found the balance and eventually blended together and it worked.”
An Evening with Il Divo Tour
The IL DIVO 2012 world tour, the group's fourth, follows the release of the quartet's latest album, Wicked Game and provides a new mark of achievement for the signature vocal blend and unique operatic arrangements which have captivated millions and launched a classical-crossover sensation.
Their most recent "An Evening With Il Divo" tour, which spanned most of 2009, saw sold out shows across 130 cities. Il Divo received the Billboard Breakthrough Award for one of the biggest grossing tours of the year.
With a new show designed by Creative Director Brian Burke (Artistic Director of 'La Reve' and Celine Dion's 5 year run of 'A New Day' at Caesars Palace, both in Las Vegas), the 2012 tour promises to incorporate a stunning visual and musical mix of fan favorites as well as premiering songs from their eagerly anticipated new album Wicked Game.
Recently named Artist of the Decade at the Classic BRITS, IL DIVO - Carlos Marin, Sebastien Izambard, David Miller, and Urs Buhler - are the most successful international musical break-out story of the millennium, selling more than 25 million albums and pioneering the classical crossover genre. Their ground-breaking success has brought an entirely new sound to vocal music and the group have more than 150 gold and platinum awards in 33 countries. Their first four albums, Il Divo, Ancora, Siempre, and The Promise have achieved 50 #1 album chart positions internationally.

Il Divo delivers another dazzling performance at the Carol Morsani Hall
Last night the world-famous pop/opera group, Il Divo performed its second concert in Tampa Bay. The Straz Center’s Carol Morsani Hall was packed with men and women of all ages to hear the four singers.
The group showcased their new album “Wicked Game” interspersed with classics and audience favorites. The song Melanconia performed during the second half of the program epitomized the mission of Il Divo. The music of Il Divo defies definite classification and can be categorized only as a cross between pop and opera. A more operatic singing style along with the heavy dramatic aspect characteristic of opera and musical theater combined with the pop tunes and upbeat renditions of more classically based songs makes Il Divo’s music truly transcendent. Incorporating such classical masterpieces as Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata into their music as well as reorchestrating pop and theater classics such as Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Don’t Cry for Me Argentina and Frank Sinatra’s My Way makes the music of Il Divo accessible to all audiences as well as giving ever concert a variety of color

Considering the relatively small size the Morsani Hall, it would have been nice to hear Il Divo sing without amplification. The Morsani Hall is small and resonant enough to have carried the four robust voices (as well as the full orchestral accompaniment) without any extra amplification. When singing their loudest and fullest, the microphones tended to obscure the warm tones of their voices, leaving them with a metallic edge. The sheer loudness also distracted from the musicality of their crescendos, as it became difficult to even focus on the harmonies without plugging one ear.
Between songs the singers engaged the audience, telling life stories, making jokes, even inviting the women to salsa dance during La Vida Sin Amor. Despite being a little sappy, they were received very warmly in both their engagement with the audience and their singing all the same, receiving multiple standing ovations. The concert ended fittingly with the encore Time to Say Goodbye and was without a doubt a crowd-pleaser.

To set the mood, lights, fog machines, and a series of shifting screens above the stage were used, but to only partial avail. Animations on the shifting screen only rarely enhanced the performance; in the group’s rendition of Melanconia, however, these visual effects were used to their full potential. Flames begin to crawl from one end of the screens to the other as the music progresses from a delicate piano. By the time the song has reached its climactic fortissimo the flames are roaring. With all four singers belting in their signature plush harmony, Il Divo brought intense drama, romance, and individuality to the music.
Each of the four singers were given solo lines, but the real horsepower behind the ensemble came from the velvety-voiced Spanish baritone Carlos Marin and American tenor David Miller. Miller was, perhaps, the most impressive of the group. As an operatically trained singer, Miller was able to project and create a brilliantly full fortissimo at an impressively high end of his vocal range. On the other hand, like Swiss tenor Urs Buhler and Sebastien Izambard from France, Miller could sing with grace and precision at a delicate piano.

The Il Divo phenomenon
By Don Fowler
Take one Spanish baritone (Carlos Marin). Add an American tenor (David Miller). Throw in a Swiss tenor (Urs Buhler). Complete the quartet with a French pop star (Sebastian Izambad). And you get the most amazing pop-opera crossover “boy group” to come along since The Beatles.
Simon Cowell auditioned hundreds of singers back in 2003 before finding the perfect blend, sending them into the recording booth to perfect their talents before emerging as one the cultural surprises of the 21st century.
Il Divo was something to experience, playing to a sold-out Providence Performing Arts audience last week, complete with full orchestra, lights, lasers, smoke and mirrors. It was quite a spectacle. And it worked. I guess I had been living in the dark these past few years, unaware of the popularity of the latest phenomenon.
Il Divo has sold over 25 million albums, sold more than 2 million concert tickets and won 150 gold and platinum discs. They were in Providence to begin their summer American tour before returning to Europe for more sold-out concerts.
Singing mostly in French and Spanish, their music is powerful and moving, mixing opera with sacred music, show tunes and even a bit of pop.
They brought down the house with their unique versions of “Hallelujah” and “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” and received the longest standing ovation that I have ever witnessed at PPAC, and I’ve seen many.
Now I know the power of Il Divo, and I will be there the next time they come to Rhode Island.

Il Divo fills TAMPA — Il Divo is a big night out. The Three Tenors, of course, are the role models for the Euro-pop-opera foursome that performed Friday night in the first of two concerts at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Devised nine years ago by Simon Cowell, the group fills a marketing niche that also includes such disparate performers as Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, the Gipsy Kings, even Sting in his symphony orchestra show. Their concerts are a good excuse for women to dress up a bit and for guys to show their sensitive, romantic sides.
The formula seems to be working. The multicultural, multilingual Divos — tenors David Miller from the United States and Urs Buhler from Switzerland, Spanish baritone Carlos Marin and French pop singer Sebastien Izambard — drew a crowd of 1,942, about 80 percent capacity, to Morsani Hall, not a bad place to hear them. Many of the concerts on their massive world tour, with four months alone in North America, are in arenas.
Il Divo occupies the "gray middle area" between pop and opera, said Miller at one point, which has led the group to sing musical theater numbers, such as a powerhouse rendition of Don't Cry for Me Argentina, a highlight of the evening. Though at least Miller has a strong opera background, the group is much more pitched toward pop, with two vaguely classical arrangements, Dove L'Amore (from Barber's Adagio for Strings) and Senza Parole (from Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata), getting fairly tepid responses from the audience. More successful were versions of Roy Orbison's Crying (Llorando), Chris Isaak's Wicked Game (Melanconia) and Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Sameness — one barrel-chested anthem after another — was sometimes a problem, with Nella Fantasia and Unchained Melody seeming to blur together in one long crescendo.
For all their matey swagger and glam outfits, Il Divo is greater than the sum of its parts, because three of the singers came across as pretty pedestrian in the charisma department, unless you were in the mood for Izambard's mawkish Frere Jacques sing-along. Only Marin, with his tanned, craggy good looks, has real star quality, displaying some gravitas yet not taking himself too seriously. He is the group's only bachelor, which kind of got beaten into the ground with his request that the "beautiful ladies" in the crowd dance for him during the salsa-inflected La Vida Sin Amor. "Tampa . . . not a dancing town," Miller said when only a few women took up the offer.
Il Divo's show, which features a 20-plus-member orchestra, is heavy on pulsating lighting, video imagery and lots of stage smoke. The visual effect is like a series of spacey screen savers for your computer.

David Miller on working with Simon Cowell; getting permission to record 'Wicked Game'
Il Divo, the men who bring opera to the masses, took home the newly created Artist of the Decade honor at the Classic Brit Awards last month.Considering the vocal quartet has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, the prize shouldn't come as a surprise. But it still moved the group's American tenor, David Miller, who reflected on the award during a recent phone interview from the road."Knowing we've made something people want to listen to," he said, "it's a very emotional moment."French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, Spanish baritone Carlos Marín and Swiss tenor Urs Bühler will join Miller on stage at the Straz Center in Tampa on Friday and Saturday. It has been the same lineup from the start of Il Divo, which is Italian for "divine male performer."Miller and the rest of the gang were assembled by Simon Cowell around the same time the music mogul became famous for his acid tongue on "American Idol.""He was all nurturing and encouraging to us," Miller said, with a chuckle. "He never said anything like, 'This is the worst filth I've ever heard.'"In 2004, Il Divo's self-titled debut came out and quickly became a global smash. The album features the group's hit cover of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart," plus standards such as "My Way" and "Unchained Melody," the latter performed in Italian. The formula has worked ever since, including on Il Divo's latest full-length "Wicked Game."Chris Isaak's title track, though, probably couldn't have been recorded by the quartet if they didn't happen to be the most famous operatic pop act on the planet.According to Miller, Isaak "never" gives permission for the song to be recorded. But his mom can."The thing was, his mom, being Italian or of Italian descent, was a fan of ours, and when we approached him, she lit up," Miller said. The deal was they could record the song but it had to be in the language of Mom's relatives."Apparently, because of her, they OK'd the song," Miller said. "But we had to do it in Italian as opera aria."In addition to winning over the masses with their endearing offerings of soft-pop standards, show tunes and classical material given a pop makeover, the men from Il Divo also woo fans with their looks. The media doesn't exactly downplay the group's visual appeal. For instance, Miller recalled a New York Times article that described Il Divo as a "hunky Armani-clad vocal group."So how does he feel about being a sex symbol?"It still boggles my mind," Miller said.

Star and Car: Sebastien Izambard
The low-down: French-born Izambard gained prominence in 2004 after a worldwide search by Simon Cowell resulted in the global pop-opera quartet Il Divo. The group has sold more than 25 million albums and won 150 gold and platinum awards in 33 countries.
Il Divo has sold more than 730,000 albums and DVDs in Australia.
Other roles: Izambard has been appearing as a judge and host on British television shows, including Popstar to Operastar.
Izambard trivia: He and wife Renee are making plans to relocate to Australia with their three children.
The fastest I’ve even driven a car: 200 km/h.
The age I got my license: 18
Car lover gauge: 5 out of 5.
What was your first car?
It was a Toyota RAV4, one of the tiny ones with three doors, very small. My wife and I got that when we got together. Then my wife fell pregnant and we only kept it for two weeks.
I was really angry at the guy who sold it to me because he told me I could fit a lot of things in there – pram, cot, this and that. No way. I had to sell it straight away.
We sold it for a bigger Toyota RAV4. But we only kept that for three months because we found out we were having twins.
What are you driving now?
A Mercedes GL. It’s a fantastic car. Everyone told me how safe they were so I went and tried one and I said: ‘That’s what I need.’
It’s a real seven-seater – the other seven-seaters I’ve seen on the market are not really spacious. The Mercedes is fantastic on every level and it was perfect for us. The nanny can even come as well.
What’s your ideal car?
If I had a choice I would have an old Aston Martin or a Mustang. That’s the kind of thing I’d like.
What’s your pet road peeve?
It’s funny because in London and Australia, drivers are so polite. In France, they are the rudest drivers I’ve ever met. Ever.
Yesterday, when we arrived in Paris on the Eurostar, I rented a car. No one gave me priority. You’re meant to give priority to people coming on the right side here. But it’s the only place in France where basically you never can get through. Instead people are aggressive in the way they drive.
What I appreciate from people is just being calm, just being relaxed. Because the more you stress the more chance you get to have an accident.
What’s your favourite drive?
The most amazing drive I’ve ever had was also the most romantic drive. It was when I just met my wife and we went to a wedding in San Francisco.
She was coming from Sydney and I was touring, so we met in LA. We rented a car and drove along the Pacific coast. It was amazing. We stopped in a few places.
We stopped in Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was the mayor. We had a fantastic, wonderful drive. The scenery is the best I’ve ever seen.
What’s your preferred drive music? Il Divo, by chance?
I never listen to myself. I hate listening to myself. What I listen to can range from Sade to Kings of Leon to Coldplay. And AC/DC

Pop-opera quartet Il Divo has quite an audIL DIVO
Worldwide, Il Divo is the most successful of the following four acts — if you’re just counting album and ticket sales.
The pop-opera quartet has only been around for six albums, but has an international audience that keeps growing since its members hail from four different countries.
Carlos Marin comes from Spain, Sebastien Izambard is from France, Urs Buhler calls Switzerland home and David Miller is a U.S. citizen.
Individually, they could be headlining major opera productions, but this pre-fabricated group is doing just fine together, singing a mixture of pop and standard songs, mostly in other languages.
The group’s new CD, “Wicked Game,” features Chris Isaak’s hit tune plus foreign versions of “Crying,” “Come What May” and others. For English-speaking fans, the album also includes the Broadway favorites “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” and “Time to Say Goodbye.”
If you still aren’t sure about attending the group’s show Saturday at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts at 52nd Street and Parkside Avenue in Philadelphia, pick up a copy of “Live in London,” Il Divo’s 2011 concert DVD that features most of the songs the foursome is performing on this tour. Other songs you might hear at this show are “Hallelujah,” “Somewhere” and “Unbreak My Heart.”

Il Divo triumphs at NJPAC debut
Tuesday night, June 5, music filled Prudential Hall’s lobby area—recorded music by a pop duo. The auditorium, heavy with haze, soon filled nearly to capacity, seats occupied everywhere but the back half of the Fourth Tier. Dry ice shrouded the darkened stage in fog. A 26-member unnamed orchestra took the stage as lights dimmed in Prudential Hall. The huge chrome geometric reflecting chandelier—the Hall’s focal point—rose to nestle in the top of the dome. Hearty cheers greeted the conductor who led the musicians in a rousing introduction to “Te amaré” (Come What May, from Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge). Beyond the dense shadows appeared four slender masculine figures in black Armani suits, and the crowd went wild.
Il Divo and Orchestra, the world’s foremost classical crossover quartet, presented a moving concert of 18 hits from albums old and new. Their latest, Wicked Game (Melanconia) from late 2011, kept the group in the recording studio longer than any other. Sébastien Izambard and David Miller, in pleasant audience banter, both called the unusual production delay a labor of love. The group wanted it ‘just right’ for all their fans, and the two men confidently expressed belief in having achieved it. Judging from the album’s eight numbers performed Tuesday, they stated matters correctly.

Izambard explained that “Dov’è l’amore” (Where Is Love?), the second number performed, was adapted from a classical number known as Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, which itself is an arrangement of the second movement, marked “Adagio”, of his String Quartet, Opus 11. The audience rightfully roared upon its dramatic conclusion.
The unsighted would certainly find plenty to enjoy from Il Divo and Orchestra without perceiving the abundant visual effects. From the ever-present fog to the roving synchronised spotlights to the suspended panels displaying vivid projections of fire, a lunar eclipse, and patterns in constant movement, all ablaze with colour, the eye had more than enough to entertain it. Which begs the question: Why? Certainly the group could hold the audience transfixed without these optical extras. That their program includes them is just one shred of evidence of the mighty machinery behind Il Divo, designers and others who obviously know how to ice a cake.
The concert’s second half displayed the Fearsome Four in other Armani attire, only slightly different from the first set. Urs Bühler’s skinny necktie was back, as was Sébastien Izambard’s bow tie, David Miller’s larger bow tie, and Carlos Marín’s allergy to ties of any sort, in view of each white shirt worn halfway unbuttoned. These identities stretched even to a second costume change, for the encore—Francesco Sartori’s “Con te partirò” (Time to Say Good-Bye). This time the four emerged wearing Armani tailcoats and cummerbunds. Group members teasingly made much of Carlos Marín’s availability as the only bachelor among them, and he himself remarked repeatedly to that effect none too subtly. The open shirts, though, were a dead giveaway.
Musical standouts in an outstanding night included Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina”, the frequently performed “Mama”, and the never-absent-from-any-concert-since-the-very-beginning “Every Time I Look at You”. Songs seemed equally divided among Spanish, Italian, and English; only one French number. Touching was the group’s performance of the Whitney Houston hit “I Will Always Love You”, sung in Italian.
Two songs, “Passerà” and “Nella fantasia”, held particular textual interest for their hopeful message of a better future. The former includes the intriguing phrase “passerà su di noi / finiremo tutti in banca prima o poi / coi perché, i chissà / e le angoscie di una ricca povertà” (It will pass away, we will end up at the bank sooner or later, with the whys, the perhapses, and the anguish of a rich poverty).
“Nella fantasia” (In My Fantasy) has a meaningful refrain that translates as: “I dream of souls who are ever free / like the floating clouds / deep down in the soul replete with humanity”. Its three verses translate as follows:

In my fantasy I see a just world.Do the members of Il Divo embody that hope for a just, free humanity? Hailing from four nations, France, Spain, Switzerland, and United States, they have surmounted linguistic and cultural barriers to a successful partnership and have flourished. Do they intend to set the example of how it can be done? How wonderful it would be if such an example were followed in no one’s fantasy, but in reality.
There, everyone lives in peace and honesty.
Refrain: I dream of souls …
In my fantasy I see a bright world.
There, even the night isn’t quite as dark.
Refrain: I dream of souls …
In my fantasy a warm wind exists
That gently blows on cities, like a friend.
Refrain: I dream of souls …

How
1:50 David Miller/Il Divo: its tough. lots of sleep. lots of water to keep the hydration up...and slow warmups so as to not over fatigue the vocal chords too soon

do you keep your voices in shape during such a tiring tour schedule
1:52 David Miller/Il Divo: tough question. this tour is actually my favorite because there is a really good ebb and flow to all the songs. some are exciting and some are more mellow and introspective...which helps from killing the vocal chords.
1:52 [Comment From LizLiz: ]

1:54 David Miller/Il Divo: no. we never think in terms of better or worse when it comes to music. its not a competition...although our boss might disagree.
